Our Story

Ravi Nagubadi is the Owner and Founder of Art of Dosa, a new fast casual concept celebrating the South Indian delicacy—the masala dosa. By trade, Ravi is a Software Engineer, but his culinary journey first began after he switched to a vegetarian diet in 1995 during his final year in college at Northwestern University—when few Chicago area restaurants carried palatable vegetarian options. He pressed his mother Aruna, a self-taught expert South Indian chef, to teach him everything she knew. Ravi’s love for his Mom’s dosas above all foods led him to focus his culinary pursuits toward creating the perfect dosa meal, eventually becoming a singular obsession.

Ravi and Aruna together chiseled every aspect of the traditional Masala Dosa meal until they created something truly divine—visually stunning dosas blending the perfect crisp and taste, with each signature accompaniment combining a unique explosion of flavor. In 2011, they were invited by the Chicagoland Veggie Fest to set up a dosa stall, which they named Art of Dosa from the outset. Urged by a yearning fan base who craved their dosas much more than once a year, Ravi finally decided it was time to start Art of Dosa as a fast casual restaurant, with the ambitious goal to usher dosa into the hearts of the entire mainstream Western public—beginning with his hometown Chicago, the bustling food capital of the world.
